Dating back to 778. Kiyomizu which literally means "pure water" takes its name from the waterfall within the temple complex. The temple is famous for the huge veranda that is supported by hundred of pillars and just at over hillside to offer impressive view of the city. Just below this hall is the waterfall "Otawa-No-Taki" where visitors drink. Sacred water believed to have therapeutic properties. The popular expression "to jump off the stage at Kiyomizu" is the Japanese equivalent of the English expression "to take the plunge".
