Toji Temple / 東寺

Toji Temple was established in 794 by imperial decree to protect the city. In 818 the emperor handed the temple over to Kukai, the founder of the shingon school of Buddhism. The pagoda of Tō-ji stands 54.8 m high, and is the tallest wooden tower in Japan. The pagoda has been, and continues to be, a symbol of Kyoto. Entrance into the pagoda itself is permitted only a few days a year.
