National(public) holidays in Japan

The list of national(public) holidays in Japan. It's established by the Public Holiday Law of Japan.

  • 1st January : New Year's Day
  • 2nd Monday of January : Coming of Age Day (成人の日, Seijin no Hi)
     The celebration day for the people who reached age of 20. 
  • 11th February : National Foundation Day(建国記念の日, kenkoku kinen-no-hi)
  • 20 (or 21) of March : Vernal Equinox Day(春分の日, Shunbun no hi)
  • [Golden Week] 29th April : Shōwa Day (昭和の日, Shōwa no hi)
  • [Golden Week] 3rd May : Constitution Memorial Day (憲法記念日, Kenpō Kinen-bi)
  • [Golden Week] 4th May : Greenery Day (みどりの日, Midori no hi)
  • [Golden Week] 5th May : Children's Day(こどもの日, Kodomo no hi)
     Children's Day is to respect children's personalities and to celebrate their happiness. 
  • 3rd Monday of July : Marine Day (海の日, Umi no Hi)
  • 3rd Monday of September : Respect for the Aged Day (敬老の日, Keirō no hi)
  • 22 (or 23) of September :  Autumnal Equinox Day (秋分の日, Shūbun no hi?)
  • 2nd Monday of October : Health and Sports Day(体育の日, Taiiku no hi)
  • 3rd November : Culture Day (文化の日, Bunka no hi)
  • 23rd November : Labor Thanksgiving Day (勤労感謝の日, Kinrō kansha no hi)
  • 23rd December : The Emperor's Birthday (天皇誕生日, Tennō tanjōbi)

Golden week

Golden Week is the longest spring vacation period of the year for many Japanese jobs including national holidays below. Usually Golden week is from 29th Apr to 5th May. Many people go for travel or back to hometown.

  • 29th April : Shōwa Day (昭和の日, Shōwa no hi)
  • 3rd May : Constitution Memorial Day (憲法記念日, Kenpō Kinen-bi)
  • 4th May : Greenery Day (みどりの日, Midori no hi)
  • 5th May : Children's Day(こどもの日, Kodomo no hi)

Silver week

Silver week is a popular name of continuous holidays holidays including national holidays in September (of end of October to early November).
